What's on my mind today is...

Paging through the latest edition of "Who's Who in America" and seeing my name.  It was very strange. There are two very large, phone book size, leather bound books that divide the alphabet in half. My wife and I thought up every name of every artist we knew and looked for them.  We found a few others.  But you would expect to see ALL the names of those you read about in all the art books. You know the names, the Harlem Renaissance group.  I expected to see all their names listed.  They weren't.

So, what's on my mind today is trying to come up with a way to build a recognition network that will allow artists living today to honor artists of yesterday, as they should be honored--that way, artists living and working today can be assured that they will be honored in the future.  I'm thinking....GY

A View of The Artist

By Albert E. Brown, Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, The University of Cincinnati

“The artist is merely a prism through which the light of life is captured and then reflected upon the canvas of the human heart…that is, in the truest sense, “Art’ reflects the spirit of its time of creation. It is likewise true that one picture can take the place of a thousand words. But paintings, unlike photographs, capture those expressions of existence that are missed by the lenses of cameras. Painting not only captures those physical expressions of life, but also those metaphysical expressions of it.

When I think about art, I am often reminded of Satre and Camus, because they presented their philosophy in novel form. They remind me that artists, artists of Gilbert Young's stature, are no different, because they present their philosophy in a similar manner except it is in on canvas.

Mr. Young has given new meaning to the old expression, "If walls could talk." As I look upon his works, the walls seem to come alive and tell the story of our times in a language that only the heart can comprehend.
